In 2015, the National Park Service states there are 23 animal species in the Everglades on both lists – federally endangered and threatened.
- To be listed as endangered or threatened there must be a loss of habitat, disease or predators, and/or overuse for commercial, recreational, scientific or educational purposes.

- Submitting a species for the endangered species list costs about $10,000 per species.
